Let the Gas Prices go up

June 29th, 2008 · No Comments

I am amazed how quickly people want the government to intervene, when it is apparently to their benefit. I would like to argue that high gas prices are GREAT for long term prosperity of America. 1) High gas prices can help us reduce healthcare costs, since people will walk and bike more. 2) High gas prices help formation of local communities, since people spend more in their community, rather than driving elsewhere. 3) Gas prices are causing people to tighten their economic belt and that is excellent for the vitality of this country. Too much of the apparent wealth in this country derived from governmental stimulation of the economy. It is OK to have an occasional recession if it helps us get the entrepreneurial spirit that fuels the country.

My suggestion if government wants to meddle: Set a gas tax high enough that would insure that gas prices are closer to $8 a gallon and then use the money generated to sponsor the new technology development. Alternatively, staying out of the market completely would safice.
