A while back I was reading through the book “Now, discover your strengths”, a sequel to “What the great managers do differently” and came across the term idiation. I had no idea what the word meant, so I looked it up. Basically, it means connetcting seemingly unrelated ideas together.
It hit me like a ton of bricks. That’s what I do. I rarely have any worthwhile original thoughts, it is just that I am willing to explore potential conections between the various thoughts that are already out there. To me, the world has to be interconnected, no matter the amount of chaos, the key is the pattern recognition. Mine is getting better, because once discovered, the basic pattern that I conceptualized in the world of business, the various aspects of it keep finding reflections in all subjects I study. Not only did my understanding of processes improved, but the same pattern applied to everything from marketing to legal field.
Interestingly, TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving) argues that 99% of problems in this world are being solved through idiation. No need to reinvent the wheel, just look at the way different industries and countries make the wheel and very often, you will end up with a much improved solution.
