I keep hearing people accusing greed for our country’s current economic problems. In truth it’s LACK of greed that is to blame. American economic system is built on a market system which only functions when people are greedy enough to pursue their self interest. Adam Smith, the father of Economics, said that it’s not for the benevalance that that the baker gets up early in the morning to bake bread, but rather by satisfying the needs of his clients, the baker serves his own self interest.
It’s not greed to kill the goose that lays you gloden eggs, it is ignorance and paranoia. Unfortunately, ignorance and paranoia are very prevelent in our society. They are fostered by our system of pandering to the ignorant and the paranoid.
While greed is not the problem, it is also not the solution. Just as fear destroys, greed hoards. Greed has led us up to the brink from which fear has made us jump. It’s healthy to have a little bit of founded fear, it serves for self preservation. It’s healthy to have enough greed to want to live life to the fullest and not accept wasting any of it. But if those are the only motivators in our life, we are no better (and in many ways worse) than animals. We need not, nor are we able to fully abandon fear and greed, but we must channel them through a greater drive. We must channel it through love. It takes love to create. Even fear and greed, when guided by love can serve to create rather than destroy. Love is service, love is commitment, low is in the now. Love is God.
In an article that I wrote a while back http://www.e-m8.org/fellowship-to-wisdom/preface/ the are presented three ways to live: Life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. You may want to read that article in light of current events and in light of realisation that preservation of life is fear, liberty is greed and pursuit of happiness is love. I would love to get your feedback on the article.
