History of E-M8, Part 3 How I applied TRIZ to develop it

November 28th, 2008 · No Comments

To arrive at it E-M8, I looked at the most popular methodologies of modern day business analysis Balanced ScoreCard (Finances, Customer, Operations, Learning and Growth) and Toyota Model (Profit, Product, Process, People) and reviewed each in light of business being a system. After all business is a technical system, albeit with lots of dynamic variables (humans), and TRIZ is the field of study of evolution of technical systems. The mapping of TRIZ model to business allow us to know what to do in each stage of business development.

First I looked at the currently defined concepts in terms of a system:

Market/Customer/Product is the Subject we seek to affect.

Method/Process/Operations is the Field.

Money/Finances/Profit is the Control.

This leaves us with people in the business models, and this lives us with the Object(tool), Transmission, Engine, the Undesired Consequence and the Desired Goal of the Su-field analysis.

So, based on some observation I decided that:
Means/Equipment/Machinery are the Tool
Manpower/Workforce/Labor are the Transmission
Management/Executive Team are the Engine
Mitigation of Legal Risks is dealing with Undesired Consequences
Mission/Purpose is the Desired Consequence

Using this as a prism through which we can view businesses, the laws of TRIZ can now be used to forecast and guide us through business development and growth cycles. For example, laws of technical evolution can be mapped to the business systems.

Combining this knowledge, with the knowledge of technological evolution, political cycles and other TRIZ tools. We are now in position to create effective and insightful models of the future.
