New career path for the middle aged

November 18th, 2008 · No Comments

There used to be a time when people had a very clear path to success in life. You graduated, went to college, got good grades, got a good job, worked there for next 40 years and retired to your suburban home. While this was never really realistic, it is a lot less realistic today. So, a new path has to be developed. No longer can a person count on their job for secure retirement.

There has to be another way. And there is: starting your own business. I am not talking about selling somebody else’s product, or chasing internet scams. I am also not talking about quitting your lucrative job to become a slave of a small retail business that your bank owns. I am talking about doing things that you are good at and being paid for it.

Middle aged people are ideally positioned to do this since they  already have loads of experience, yet have lots of strength left.  By chosing to work on the projects that may involve the family and kids, they can, with some guidance, develop a business that both serves their community and generates enough revenue to allow them to transition in to doing it full-time.

But, let’s face it, most small businesses are too much work. They are certainly more work than just going to work. While they can be fun, there is a bigger goal in mind.

The business must grow. And growing a healthy business requires lots of discipline. Something that middle aged people have plenty of. Some may stop here, but I hope you catch the bug and start starting more businesses and helping others to do the same. If you do, you won’t have to retire. After all, you will already be doing what you love. That’s the best retirement of them all.
