Purpose, the key to Baby Boomer retirement

November 17th, 2008 · No Comments

The Baby Boomer generation has been the generation that has changed every aspect of our society. It seems as though the whole world revolves around the challenge that our society is facing as they get older.

They have worked all their life in the mind numbing jobs that they did not much care for, looking all these years toward retirement. Now, in a matter of a couple months, a large portion of their savings has been wiped out.

The American government is taking on more debt. It seems that there is no hope of freedom or security in their old age any more. Now Baby Boomers have to make a choice: they can blame the big bad government, big bad corporations, foreign countries, or whoever else they want to blame; or they can decide to focus on making a difference in the community, building up instead of tearing down and bringing hope to the weary world.

The world today needs people who are willing and able to change the way they think. The world needs people with a purpose and a passion. The Millennials need the leadership of the Baby Boomers, but they need the Baby Boomers who are capable of being effective in our bold new world. The world of infinitly flexible business and constantly changing risks.

Instead of thinking it terms of lazy, do nothing retirement, the Baby Boomer generation needs to reinvent itself as a generation of Social Entrepreneurs.

The world has changed. There is no reason why anyone should dread their job any more. Instead, we need  entire generations of people who have to discover how to create value, utilize their strengths and above all, have fun doing it. Our young people need their grandparents, our communities need them. We need them to help shape the future for their grandchildren.

Let’s face it. Traditional retirement is not an option for most. But the truth is, thats not a great loss. After all, people live longer, more exciting and fulfilled lives not when they retire early, but when they devote their life to doing the things that matter. It is a matter of purpose, it is a matter of passion. It is something that I help my clients discover in their lives on a regular basis. Your life can be filled with passion to overflowing.

Are you ready to have a life of meaning?

Then think about these questions and drop me a line:

  1. Whose lives would you like to impact?
  2. When, how and with whom do you have most fun?
  3. What are you good at? What do you friends ask you to help out with?
