I am a believer when it comes to teams and when it comes to work. Teams can get done what individuals cannot. Teams are powerful. Work is even more powerful. It can heal and motivate. It can give meaning and purpose. Yet, being a fan of the two, I refuse to believe in teamwork.
To be sure I believe in a team getting together and planning. I believe in the team blocking for each other and passing the ball at just the right moment. But in the end, there has to be a personal accountability. Too often, teamwork is something that is used to hide behind to avoid getting stuff done. Too often teamwork is touted for the sake of teamwork. The truth is work is an individual effort, albeit combined and coordinated with individual efforts of others.
I believe that we can succeed or fail as a team. I believe that we can do more as a team than we can by ourselves. I believe that it takes contributions of each person’s work to make the team truly shine. Yet, the faceless nameless teamwork, with no clear hand offs, no deliniated responsibilities, is the breeding ground for desaster.
