Inaugural address

January 21st, 2009 · No Comments

I did not get a chance to watch the inaugural address live, so I heard lots of opinions before I finally read it. Maybe it was because everyone said that they fealt let down, or maybe because I read it instead of watching it I actually thought it was quite good.

Here is a selection of phrases that are in my mind worth noting and how they resonated with me:

“we the people have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears, and true to our founding documents.” – Not sure we did or why we should, but there is a certain idealism in this claim, and that’s very appealing.

“Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence … our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age.” – It’s buried in the speech and does not stand out, but this is the real heart of the problem. Most people don’t even recoginize that a new age is coming. My entire life’s ambition is to prepare people to usher in this new age of business, where things are done nearly instantly and the only limited resource is the human brain, is no longer quite so limited any more.

“all are free and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.” – My article on life, liberty and pursuit of happiness tells you just how to pursue that full measure of happiness. Search for it on this site.

“it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.” – It’s about time we stop glorifying athletes and musicians, Wall Street personalities and politicians and start taking a road of no shortcuts, that lies through the heart of America’s Main Street.

“We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that … bind us together.” – This is a bit of a throwback. I don’t want to be bound by electric grids and digital lines. The new age is the age of wireless. It is an age of autonomous power. Why are we building up infrastructure that leads us away from that? Why do we build more roads, instead of designing our communities so as to minimize driving?  I guess I have a bone to pick with the old age thinking that tries to masquarade itself as something new.

“And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age.” – I have a better solution, let’s replace them with completely new models that actually fit the age in which we are moving. Changing what we have is like putting on a new facade, it’s just not good enough. My article on why college is no longer enough and how to suppliment it addresses this issue well.

“The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works” – The man stole the words right out of my blog and did not give me any credit. Plagiarism… Well, Ok, I guess I’ll let him borrow my ideas, after all, he might actually be able to do something with them.

“do our business in the light of day — because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government” – How about making it a part of our culture in business and in local government as well, oh wait, the president can’t do that, we just have to get over our persanal paranoia and realize that transparency creates opportunities.

“our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint. ” – yep, NORAD is a waste of money (sorry Rex, but I am sure we can find some other job for your son). It does help to have the world’s best propaganda machine though, to insure that our cause is perceived as just…

“spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves …  is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all. ” – As Jesus said: greater love has no man than to lay down his life for a friend. Now if everyone I don’t like just gave me some love, the world might be a much quieter place. But joking aside, therein lies the secret of true happiness.

“This is the source of our confidence — the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny. ” – A great source of confidence, especially to the unbelievers. Yet, he makes a valid point, it is the shaping of our destiny by us that shapes us and our relationships and who we are. And that is what God after.

Hope you enjoyed my digestion of the address. Write about your thoughts.
