The secret of getting things done can be learned from children’s joke: How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
This is a great wisdom. If we followed that wisdom we would never be overwhelmed, never have too much or too little on our plate. Never get stuck. Always able to manage our risks. In other words, we would be highly likely to succeed repeatedly.
Breaking projects down in to small tasks and phases, not only assures us that there is no huge up front capital outlay, or hidden unforeseen risks. But ir insures that we have a fighting chance of being on time on budget and to specifications.
The problem with this solution is that it is too simle, so we coat it in fancy words, call it Project Management, certify people in knowing the Project Management vocabulary, charge lots of money for their time and in the process create ever bigger projects.
It’s all hubris. Just break it down in to small enough chunks that each of them makes sense on its own and then complete each chunk on its own. Repeat as many times as neccessary.
