When managers step up

January 4th, 2009 · No Comments

Something wonderful happened during our John Harbor’s leadership counsel. A manager stepped up. She did what all the owners and investors talked about. She brought schedule in line with the business reality. And through doing that, she became a real manager.

Managers are the people that have to make tough and often unpleasant decisions. They have to balance all eight priorities of business and make adjustments when things are out of whack. They have to take lead and act, when everyone else would rather just talk about it.

The reality of it, is that few teams allow real managers. Most owners are too paranoid of losing control. Well, the truth is that control is mostly an illusion anyways. It is something worth losing, if other things can be gained. Sometimes, the best way to get things under control is to apparently lose any semblance of it.
