Fireproof your business

February 7th, 2009 · No Comments

A friend of mine had me over to watch “Fireproof”. It is actually a fairly decent movie, with a good heart, if you get past the first 10 minutes or so of really bad acting /editing. It is brilliant as a marketing ploy to cross sell lots of other products.

But that is not what I want to write about today.  Rather I want to consider the possibility of fireproofing our business. To be sure fires will come, it is our readiness and preemptiveness that is necessary in fighting fires that will help our business overcome them.

Businesses are built on a strength of the interpersonal relationships. Yet, it seems we spend so little time devoting to developing our relationships. For example, how often do we take time to just get to know each other or discuss the things that are happening in our lives? How much time do we devote to enjoying the company of our co-workers and, perhaps even more importantly, our customers and suppliers?

We focus on getting stuff done and managing the numbers, but the stuff gets done when we just have fun with one another and numbers are a mere consequence of how we manage our relationships.

Great relationships are the best risk management tool out there, so the same principles that apply in “Fireproof” apply in business.
