The current economic contraction is apparently drawing to a close, with the money markets freeing up, inflation shooting up and unemployment going through the roof (all signs of the beginning of the recovery). That does not mean that our country will not be in for fair amount of pain for the next few years. This is because the workforce needs are rapidly changing and we have no effective way to retrain ourselves.
The routine work is being automated or shipped off overseas. The creative work awards the best in each given field, creating a huge distance between the ones that succeed and everyone else.
Most importantly, our educational system does little to foster and lots to squash creativity and creative thinking. Creativity is relegated to art and music classes and is regarded as a fun thing to do when you don’t have to worry about money. Yet, entrepreneurs and inventors are the people who largely influence the success of a particular nation.
The future may hold a marvelous technological advancement, but it is likely to produce very uneven world where teams of successful Creatives and people who have learned to cater to their needs do considerably better than the people who have failed to join one of those groups.
On the other hand, the Creatives by their very nature have the drive to improve the world and help those less fortunate, so like all historic transitions, they may well be willing to share the wealth, because in a greater scheme of things, doing so is in their own self interest.
