The movie Matrix has missed it completely. The machines will not grow large and smart, they will grow small but powerful. How small? Well imagine the world where one’s thoughts can manipulate things on molecular level. Yep, that’s right nano-technology will make most traditional technollogy obsolete. No longer will we need technology outside us, when we can have the technology neatly hiding itself in our bodies. No big probes in to the brain, just an invisible network of robots that are too small to see, yet are capable of rapidly moving atomic particles. In this world, human minds can be directly manipulated, objects and living beings can be created out of thin air (after all most objects are carbon, oxigen, hydrogen and nitrogen) as well as moved around and modified. It is a scary world to fathom, yet it is also a world full of opportunity and promise. The same robot that’s small enough to attack cancerous cells is small enough to kill or rewire human brains at will. The same robotic system that facilitates creation can serve to destroy. The same systems that are created to enhance security and privacy can serve to completely destroy any remnants of both.
This is a world where governments are irrelevant, where things we consider valuable are no longer relevant. It is the world where the ultimate delusions of the few who have this technology can dictate the lives of everyone who does not. After all, these people like the magi of the fairy tales will be able to use the power of their own thought to direct microscopic robots to manipulate any aspect of reality outside or inside them.
The programming of the robotic forces will be the occupation that will keep these people busy, unless of course the figure out a way to manipulate others in to doing the work for them. After all, the brain power will be the only limited resource in that age, just as it is today. (Matrix was not completely wrong here).
The physical world of the future, may well look much better, since we’ll have the nano-robots that can be used to fix and emprove the environment. Besides all that excess carbon in the air, will be an excellent source of materials for the robots and the items they will make.
The question that faces us is not if these types of technologies are possible, or if there is a practical way from keeping their development from happening. The question is will we as a society be mentally and emotionally ready to handle the responsibility of living in the world with these technologies. After all, technology is but a tool to do things we want to do more efficiently. Instead of just focusing upon the tools we must ask ourselves a more basic question: what is so truly important that will dominate the pursuits in the world where physical constraints are removed.
What will your world look like if you can control all matter with your mind and can communicate with others strictly by thought? Will you serve the mankind, will you choose to control it, or will you just comfortably lay there in the ultimate drug experience that you have induced upon your body? Share your stories…
