The state budget deficits

May 20th, 2009 · No Comments

California is running a huge budget deficit (21 billion as of the last estimate). But actually, per capita, Wisconsin is doing significantly worse.  Wisconsin budget has an almost 6B hole in it, and that’s with population of less than 6M to support it. That is a deficit of close to $1,000 for every breathing human in the state of Wisconsin, close to $2,000 for every person working in Wisconsin. This means that in order to operate the Wisconsin government, we will spend $2,000 per working person more this year than we take in. Thus, considering that our median wages are around $40,000 we are overspending our earnings through the state government alone by 5%. When you consider the huge national debt and over spending by the individual consumers, you realise that the quality of our life is not sustainable.

We will have to learn to live on less while producing more. The only way that we can do that is through retooling to make ourselves the most efficient producers of the things the world wants. Since we do not have more money to throw at education, we must first learn to educate effectively, i.e. by doing. Thus our accreditation standards must change from activity to result based outcomes. Our teaching practices must change.  Unfortunately, without strong leadership in this area these changes are unlikely.
