Book Review: Motivation and Productivity by Saul Gellerman

July 17th, 2009 · No Comments

This week I had an opportunity to read a chapter on Motivation and Productivity by Saul Gellerman. It crystallized for me why only the more successful people seem to volunteer, why I’d rather teach people who are already successful or come from successful families than people who in theory need the education the most. It appears that I assume that most people are at least a little achievement motivated. That is completely unrealistic.

This article also serves as a proof text for the argument that stagnant corporate environment tears at the very fabric of American psyche. It nurtures the behaviors that are in-congruent with achievement motivation. While it is not the best writing on the topic, I still recommend it.
