In my mind there are two criteria for truly entrepreneurial people: they are always exploring, learning and brainstorming; and they have the discipline to follow through on their ideas. Subjectively, it is always easy to tell people who are eager for ideas, and are open to alternative ways of thinking. These people seek and accept counsel, they have interests in multiple fields of study, they are extremely knowledgeable in every area they engage in. They value input and they value people who provide them with input. But what is a meaningful scale for objective measurement ? The difficulty of measurement lies in that we want to measure accomplishment not activity. It is irrelevant how many learning activities they engaged in, but how much did they learn? That’s a question that the entire educational community has been wrestling with.
Discipline of the followthrough is a lot easier to measure, since we can have a ratio of tasks started to tasks successfully completed as an indication of followthrough. But it takes a meaningful answer to both of these questions for the management to be truly entrepreneurial.
