What does a good manager look like?

July 22nd, 2009 · No Comments

A good worker is one that is engaged. You know he/she is engaged when they are not afraid to work themselves out of a job. Workers who feel safe and encauraged to innovate and improve things to the point where they replace themselves either by better processes or by people they trained are extremely valuable, inspite of the fact that many corporations choose not to value them.

But a great manager, has to go beyond that standard. They must have the ability to create productive jobs for themselves and those around them. When they do, that causes the best of the employees to rise up with them.

So, a good manager is one who is aware and has follow-through. Without listening, watching and observing, at best the manager will likely get blindsided all the time. Without follow-through, the manager could have the right answers and not be able to turn them in to reality. Aware managers can motivate their employees and manage relationships. They can fill in the gaps in their other abilities. Managers that follow-through get stuff done.

Outside of these two requirements good managers can come in any shape and size, they can have any kind of a temperament and disposition and still be successful.
