Ability before Motivation

August 15th, 2009 · No Comments

Last night I realised something that may appear obvious to the rest of the world, but was like a discovery for me. I think it will change the way I teach. If motivation starts with a choice, people who can’t even see the choice, by definition cannot make it. It takes imagination to ignite their ability to chose. Until an idea can be imagined, experienced, felt, analysed, communicated, feedbacked upon, and understood, the insight necessary to allow for the possibility of the choice is simply not there.

So, as a manager, as a coach, or as instructor, before I can address issues of motivation; before I can even address them in my own life; I must address the issue of ability. If I don’t percieve myself to be able to do it, I will not be able to will or motivate myself to doing it. As far as I would be concerned, I would not even have the choice of doing it.

What are your thoughts?
