While it took me about 20 pages to really get in to “A Hat Full of Sky,” I found myself really enjoying it and being pleasantly surprised with not being able to put it down until I was done reading. This book is a pretty good work of fiction, but it also has a number of observations about human abilities and motivations, as well as the educational process. The story also does a great job talking about the unintended consequences and the importance of being aware. “What you don’t know can kill you” – says the book.
In the book Tiffany becomes an apprentice of a hag and deals with a hivver, a critter that tries to live his life out through her. But despite the odd world with odd creatures and odd vocabulary, the story is, in my mind, about a girl who is discovering that which really matter, the heart.
I also was impressed with the advocacy of a tipping economy that was advocated in the book. Paying it forward is an important theme.
All in all a great read, with many valuable illustrations.
