It seems the word PRIVATE stood out to me this weekend, from book “Summerhill” to series “Boston Legal” to my Administrative Law homework the concept of Private has come up again and again.
It is a very powerful concept, it implies property right, a right of private association and a right to privacy. And yet it seems to me that the basis of the concept of private is really a societal agreement to consider “private” private in the first place. After all, there is noting existential about our private rights and rights to privacy. For that matter many societies never developed a very high regard for either.
At the same time, though, the concept of private is at the very basis of our economy, of our very society. It would be meaningless to talk of trade if there were no private property, for example.
What I am currently fascinated with is the attempts to develop Intellectual Property laws and the debate over private ownership over thoughts and ideas. What are some of the developments in that area that you have come accross?
