As I was working on the individual version of the Enterprise Matrix (E-M8), my mind shifted to something seemingly unrelated – the gospel. Not so much the message of it, but the process that is advocated. It became apparent to me why millions pray the sinner’s prayer, with only a small fraction having any kind of a change in their lives.
My new theory is that the expectation of commitment before there has been an opportunity to develop relationship and trust, is misguided. It cannot survive the Storming stage of relationship building. Dr. Hendrick’s diamond is at work here: Commitment is the third base, it is at the least counterproductive to run to the third base, without having covered the first two.
So, when many Christians invite people to commit themselves to God, whom those people do not know, nor trust; at best, in many cases, the result is futility and frustration.
This principle is just as crucial in corporate world, where often the call is to commitment. But without foundation of respect and trust, that call does little but demoralizes the troops.
