Summerhill is a book about the school that has used freedom and discretion, along with participative democracy to become one of the most unique schools in the middle of 20th century. The book “Summerhill” details the views and the experiences of the person that ran it. This book is a great read because it forces us to rethink just about everything about human behavior and motivation. Written with a strong practical bend, the book, is peppered with personal anecdotes and stories.
Both the successes and frustrations that are detailed are very illustrative, in spite of the fact that much has changed about the culture and child rearing paradigms in last 50 years. If you are serious about understanding motivation and learning, this book is well worth the enjoyable read. About the only minus other than being a bit dated is the mixing of British and American English.
