I just enjoyed the previlage of watching The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. The story is awesome, the delivery is superb, but most of all it teaches us the value of a good head fake: when we are directing someone to do something that they may think is fun not because of the intrinsic value of this activity, but because in the process they will learn something valuable.
The values he talks about are also among the values every professional needs to be successful:
- Tell the truth
- Be earnest
- Apologize when you screw up
- Focus on others, not yourself
- Show dedication; the walls are there to stop others but not you
- Work hard (be passionate about what you do)
- Create a feedback loop and value the feedback
- Show gratitude
- Don’t complain
- Find the best in everyone – If you wait long enough people will show you their good side
- Luck = preparation + opportunity
His lecture on Time Management is equally worth the time.
