Argument #1 against singuarity

October 16th, 2009 · No Comments

The basic premise of Ray Kurzweil in the argument for coming singularity is that there will come a point where the world and eventually the universe will become integrated in to one globally connected fully integrated intelligence. Before I present any other arguments against or questions with regard toward Singularity, I must first question the assumption that the world today is not already a globally connected fully integrated intelligence.

It is both conceivable and entirely possible that our Universe is a fully functioning intelligent being, or at least that it was created by such a being. In fact, many of the world’s belief systems are based on one of the above premises. The reality of intelligence arising out of non-intelligence seems to challenge the whole principle of entropy. Thus, to base a theory on the belief that randomness creates wisdom, is to start with a shaky foundation.

No amount of technology can help us understand and appreciate the beauty of our world. Often, I would argue, technology can actually blind us to the world around us. While, some people look in the microscope and see the mysteries of God, for many the very same view becomes their argument against one.

Thus, while I do not disagree that the world will continue to be reshaped to ever greater degree by technology, there is no evidence that such a process in itself will do nothing to increase our wisdom.
