Argument #2 against singuarity

October 18th, 2009 · No Comments

For questions of Eternal significance information processing speed is not of the essence. Technology cannot for example enhance our sense of awe and wander over the mysteries of the universe.
Even if we reject the first argument that there is already intelligence in the Universe, the question arises: Does computational speed plus access to lots of data, equal intelligence? After all, there are many facets of intelligence that are anything but raw computational power: empathy, mercy, forgiveness, passion.
I fully understand that given enough time and effort we can create systems that can simulate these facets of human intelligence and will be able to even appear more human then human, thus not just passing the Turning test, but beating it to peaces. I also, fully understand that these systems can be integrated to create a complex mind that is capable of learning and adjusting at a rate that is much faster than a human mind ever could, but does that mean that it has to act as an all absorbing Borg? I would argue that truly intelligent systems appreciate things that are other than, that are different, that cannot be comprehended and must be enjoyed.
It is like a difference between the wisdom of a biologist and a gardener. Biologist may well know more about the plants, but he must kill them in the process. It is wisdom to recognise that not all things can or even should be comprehended. Some things, in deed many of the more crycial things in life should not be analyzed and are often destroyed in the process of analysis.

Life is made up of these uncertainties and unpredictabilities that cannot be mainatined in a closed system. There must be an other than, in order for the life and love to really unfold.
