If I am unable to persuade you with any of the arguments as to why singularity is not the likely outcome of the future, I will switch sides and argue that a concept of a symbiotic community that shares each others thoughts through indwelling of the very breath of life is not at all a new concept and has been the mainstay of Christian thought for centuries.
The only difference is that in Christian belief the humans are not augmented by technology, but rather by God’s indwelling. Really, the concept of being indwelling by the Breath (aka Spirit) is not too fundamentally different from being augmented by micro technology that is small enough to be hidden from view on atomic and sub atomic levels.
The assumptions about this world are different, but in fact the net result is not fundamentally too different. In case of Christians, they believe that God is through this process expressing Himself. In the case of fans of Singularity they are talking about an ever expanding computational borg that expresses itself. Only the goals of these cooperative systems are different: whereas the Christian version focuses on creating a community of brotherly love and mutual enjoyment, the wander of the world that I talked about earlier; this technological borg that we call Singularity rather than pursuing life and love, pursues knowledge… hey wait a minute the scriptures begin with men picking the tree of knowledge that is apart from God in place of tree of Life, which is God. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
But I’d love to hear your thoughts about it.
