Singularity is Fear

Ray Kurzweil is predicting that soon we will all be a part of one big integrated intelligence where humans and computers will dwell in a symbiotic relationship. He is no doubt a brilliant man and yet, I would like to over next few blog posts challenge some of the assumptions in his prognosis of the future world events on a few different grounds.

  1. There is no reason to believe that humans (at least some of them) are not already part of greater intelligence. In my experience, Our Universe is a great proof of intelligence in its design. I am not sure that more technology is what will help us to finally understand and appreciate the beauty of our world. Awareness in my experience comes though revelation that often happens quite apart from any technological change.
  2. For questions of Eternal significance information processing speed is not of the essence. Technology cannot for example enhance our sense of awe and wander over the mysteries of the universe.
  3. The beauty of a current system of intelligence is precisely in its suboptimization, since that is what makes it flexible and adoptable.
  4. Complete integration aids the spread of the detrimental effects of viral activity and thus making a more homogeneous population more susceptible to eradication.
  5. Nanotechnology, like any other technology requires a lot less precision to kill people then to make them whole, thus some of the first applications will be military, spying and mind-control, thus at least initially there can be lots of negative effects of a technology that is way more powerful than anything we’ve mishandled in the past.
  6. Finally, if I am unable to persuade you with any of the above arguments, I will argue that a concept of a symbiotic community that shares each others thoughts through indwelling of the very breath of life is not at all a new concept and has been practiced by many for centuries.

So, stop back soon for the detailed explanation…

Oleg, speaking of nanotechnology I am working on a book (for kids) on invisibility cloaks, which depend on metamaterials made using nanotechnology…JP is very worried about how these cloaking devices might be misused by authorities…at the moment they don’t seem to be technologically advanced enough for much misuse, but that may change rapidly over the next few years.

Your singularity arguments are quite interesting! keep it up…
