The principle that you should not build anything you have not already sold is at the heart of the world of mass customization. It is essential to reducing waste, but just as importantly it may be the only ticket to start and operate a business in a cash tight economy. Bootstrapping is the best way to operate a business because it really forces us out of the clouds and in front of the customer.
If this was the only thing you knew about starting businesses, you would be in a better place then 90% of budding entrepreneurs, based on this rule alone.
If you manage to combine it with the rule that you will not sell anything you cannot deliver, you simply will not be able to lose. So, go. Sell. But do it by asking what they want and figuring out if you have the capacity to do it.
