Is Google wave turning in to a dud?

December 20th, 2009 · No Comments

I hope it is not so, because I love the promise of it, but my own wave account seems to suggest that it is.  Gone is the excitement of the early use, now it looks like my 20+ wave contacts have not updated a wave in at least a few weeks, I find myself logging in only once in a blue moon and nobody is clamoring for invitations.

What happened? I don’t think it was the bugs, of which there were a few that were quite annoying. I don’t think it was the lack of the advertised plug-ins and complexity in adding them, though that certainly did not help with the feeling that the wave was oversold and underdelivered.  Primarily, I think it is yet another technology that is a solution in search of the problem. Yes, the capability of web embedding is nice, but there are other tools to do that. Yes, the instant messaging is slick, but in added complexity and apparent permanence of the record lost is the heart of an easy and free flowing conversation. But in the end, the real death of the wave is it’s lack of integration with existing services. I cannot e-mail myself from the wave, I cannot set notifications or get a summary of changes sent to my mail. I cannot easily import/export documents and set parameters of how the documents are treated. I cannot SMS or text to or from the wave.

Can Google save this, yet. I am sure they could, but it looks like it is years away from being the killer app that it appeared during their early presentations.
