Laying foundations for a healthy business

January 10th, 2010 · No Comments

It seems amazing how often we plunge in to new ventures without having lain any foundations. I am not even talking about research, planning and thought necessary to start building. That too is a common problem, but in the context of very simple businesses, this one can be overcome with the right foundations.

Rather, I am talking about laying the foundation of trust, relationships, expertise and connections that need to be put in place before there is even a chance that  there may be a business. Businesses start and end with relationships. They have relationships as their purpose and their foundation. Thus they are built on the basis of a community that supports them.

It is costly, dangerous and irresponsible to build a business without having a stable foundation. This is why learn by doing team development projects and other pseudo academic activities can work so well to provide the foundation necessary for business success.

While I continue to look for like minded individuals and organizations that are interested in funding these kinds of projects, we continue to lay our own foundations by weekly meeting at the One Way Cafe in Tosa. We continue to lay that foundation by organizing StartupAccelerator and  meeting with anyone who is open to working together on developing a better way to facilitate the laying of the foundations.
