I am always amazed at the gap between the educational setting and the practical realities of the world of business. Probably the clearest gap between the two is visible in Project Management. The world is dying for the lack of great project managers, yet the colleges manage to graduate the students of that major who have never actually completed a real project. What I love about the real projects, is that unlike the academic ones, everything always goes wrong. Project manager actually has to manage, not just fill out forms or write papers. Most importantly they must manage the expectations: of the team, of the customer, of the sponsor, of the stakeholders. They must do what they must do to make sure that it all comes together in the end. And the only way to do that consistently is to not just control the ball, but adjust the goal posts as necessary.
Project Management is 99% managing expectations
