Project management has been a part of my life ever since I was a little kid. It was not too much after I learned to write when my parents noticed me with a list that I compiled: “Needed to build a raft: 2 tree trunks, 2 flat planks, 4 nails; Tools: Hammer and Axe.” Needless to say growing up near a lake was one of the central features of my childhood. Nevertheless, it seemed obvious to me that the first thing to do was to have a plan. It was not a well researched plan, but a plan nonetheless. It was not until my parents made a big deal out of it and continued to bring it up many years later that I realized how utterly foreign this concept is to most people.
As an adult I both studied and practiced project management, but continued to come to the conclusion that every project management technique works by breaking the project into ever smaller chunks and making the visions and assumptions more and more explicit. Thus, next time you are faced with seemingly insurmountable problem (on the order of difficulty similar to building a raft for a five year old) , do what I did and write down all the necessary ingredients, before you start cooking. Good luck and let me know if this simple technique ever fails you.
