As an update on my travels. Things are going fairly well in the Caucasus mountains, but I am looking forward to going to Ukraine again. This is a part of the world that is different enough from the familiar that in order to be a comedian elsewhere one only has to record street conversations here and play them to the general public in other parts of the world. It seems that outside of the effort spent on looking “good” (by their standards), the general populace is devoted to devouring the sunflower seeds and doing little other than socialising. Everything is slow, everyone does things the most difficult way possible, and someone else is always at fault. So, in spite of gorgeous nature and generally friendly people, I would not recommend private tours unless you are really ready to experience extreme circumstances. Fortunately for me I have not lost too much time and money to the local frustrations, but even the regular day to day takes most of the day in the present circumstances. Oh, and Internet cafes do not have Internet, since they are underground gaming facilities. Go figure, underground, with the payouts listed on the wall.
These circumstances help me better appreciate the virtues of a country where laws are more functional, where there is a legal recourse, but most of all where people value learning and creating above appearing and taking advantage.
