Jim, I'd love to hear all about your talks with these literary giants. I am a fan of both Asimov and Bradbury and have read a number of their works. I do not want to condemn the entire sci-fi genre, it has nourished me and taught me to think. Being able to read Genrich Altov as a teenager along with Wells, Verne, Azimov, Brothers Strugatskie, Harrison and many more shaped my world and inspired me to dream. But with few exceptions even these giants of the genre have tended to write about the big external enemy. Yet, I love that the War of the Worlds ends with the bacteria destroying the enemies of the earth. They tended to focus on the evolution toward bigness. Yet, to my mind progress in nano-technologies may yet create a world where there is little need in giant machines. In my view the path and challenges of progress will be less like Matrix where men live in the machine, and more just the opposite, where many many machines live within man.

While I understand your point, I have to wonder if recent media is your only exposure to sci-fi. There was an age when science-fiction was much more an extension of our imaginative selves. (Even Genrich Altschuller published an anthology of science-fiction tales.) I've been fortunate to talk to Asimov, Clarke, Bradbury, and other literary giants of the genre from days gone by. I would suggest that failure of imagination is a recent development, and is reflected both in the relatively poor genre offerings of the day, and the maliase which has affected industries far and wide.

Very good fine point put on the concept. It speaks to the fundamental unwritten tenant that an informed and active public is essential to the proper functioning.
Strict hierarchy has a place in my heart too, and your point about creativity unleashed in a democracy is not made enough.

Hi Brian, definitely had no expectation of being too strict on any theological interpretation, especially considering the story is told by a somewhat schizophrenic devil, but I am glad you found it thought provoking and would love to hear those thoughts.

Interesting perspective... I'm not sure how I feel about the theological analogy, but the business angle is thought-provoking.

Hey Oleg! Being a pretty consistent customer at that particular Alterra I would say that I am surprised, but I really can't say that I am. It's a little surprising since it's local, but being environmentally concientious seems like it is losing face recently. I think that this is just a small example of how Americans will continue to put comfortability in front of environmental responsibilty.

The real reason I am commenting though, is because I haven't talked to you in ages and that Alterra is right out my back door! Where are you staying these days? If you're close we should meet for coffee. Maybe we could even sit in the patio?

Oleg: I agree with you on Susan Marshall's leadership ideas. The three C's--competence, confidence and courage--are teachable life skills for everyone, not just business leaders.
